Halley avrebbe dato alla stella questo nome in onore di Carlo II re d'Inghilterra.&lt;br /&gt;

Secondo altre fonti (vedi ad esempio http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cani_da_Caccia_(costellazione)) il nome Cor Caroli pare sia stato indicato per la prima volta nel 1673 dal cartografo inglese Francis Lamb - ma era stato Charles Scarborough, medico di corte di Carlo II, ad attribuirle il nome.&lt;br /&gt;
Il medico affermò di averla vista brillare con una luce particolarmente intensa la notte del 29 maggio 1660, quando Carlo II fece ritorno a Londra restaurando la monarchia e vendicando storicamente il padre Carlo I, decapitato, come già ricordato, da Cromwell. (cfr Gabriele Vanin, &amp;quot;I nomi delle stelle&amp;quot;, Nuovo Orione 2004).&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Cor Caroli è una delle stelle doppie più belle e famose del cielo, attributo che si adatta a molte delle stelle di cui si parla da queste pagine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Il sistema di Cor Caroli (Struve 1692) conta 2 sole componenti (quelle visibili al telescopio), che hanno la particolarità di essere entrambe doppie spettroscopiche.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
La prima osservazione risale al 1722, separazione 22&amp;quot; e angolo di posizione 234°, valori che nel 2007 sono rispettivamente 19,3&amp;quot; e 229°. Il Washington Double Star Catalog riporta 144 misure di separazione.&lt;br /&gt;

Prima della missione Hipparcos si riteneva che le due componenti costituissero una doppia fisica: non era stato evidenziato nessun moto orbitale, e tuttavia le stelle sembravano condividere lo stesso moto proprio. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Il satellite Hipparcos, oltre a mettere in evidenza il fatto che i moti propri sono in realtà abbastanza diversi, ha rivelato che la stella più brillante, la Alpha 2 CVn è distante 110 anni luce, mentre quella più debole, la Alpha 1 CVn, è più vicina, distando 82 anni luce.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Si tratta quindi di un interessante caso di doppia ottica, o prospettica, rivelato da misure astrometriche abbastanza recenti.&lt;br /&gt;

Questa doppia è molto facile da osservare, è sufficiente un piccolo telescopio a ingrandimenti medio-bassi.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Come spesso capita, non c'è completo accordo sui colori delle due componenti fra le varie fonti:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- il &amp;quot;Deep-Sky Observer's Handbook&amp;quot; della Webb Society riporta i colori bianco/bianco&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- entrambe gialle secondo William Tyler Olcott (&amp;quot;Fied Book of the skies&amp;quot;)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- Mike Ropelewski (&amp;quot;A visual Atlas of Double Stars&amp;quot;) indica bianco e bianco-bluastro, ma invita ogni osservatore a farsi la sua opinione &lt;br /&gt;
