La 12 Lyncis è una stelle priva di nome proprio. Flamsteed le assegnò il numero 12, e si trova in una costellazione poco nota. Se tutti quanti associano determinati campi stellari a Orione, allo Scorpione, all'Orsa Maggiore, quando si parla della Lince (Lynx) le idee sono molto più confuse.&lt;br /&gt;

La costellazione della Lince fu introdotta dall'astronomo Hevelius nel 1687. Lo stesso Hevelius scrisse che bisognava avere i proverbiali occhi di lince per riuscire a vedere a occhio nudo le stelle che la formavano.  La Lince riempie uno spazio vuoto fra l'Orsa Maggiore e l'Auriga, suno spazio molto ampio. La lince, ad esempio, copre un'area di cielo superiore a quelle della costelazione dei Gemelli. Non è dato sapere se Hevelius avesse in mente, quado ha designato la costellazione, il personaggio mitologico di Linceo, che godeva della vista più acuta al mondo e che partecipò alla spedizione degli Argonauti.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
La stella doppia di questo mese è quindi una sfida per la sua ricerca visuale e l'occasione per visitare una costellazione decisamente poco praticata dai principianti.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
La 12 Lyncis, catalogata da F.G.W. Struve al numero 948 del suo catalogo, e nota oggi con la sigla STF 948, è famosa fra gli appassionati di stelle doppie per la sua componente AC: una coppia con magnitudini 5.4 e 7.1 separate da 9.4&amp;quot; all'epoca della scoperta (1782) e oggi distanti 8.9&amp;quot; (2007): in poco più di 200 anni la separazione è diminuita di circa 1/2 secondo d'arco, mentre l'angolo di posizione è passato da 303° a 310°.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Esiste anche una componente AB, di magnitudini 5.4 e 6, separazione 1.9&amp;quot; (2007) e angolo di posizione 62°, più impegnativa da sdoppiare ma comunque alla portata di piccoli telescopi in serate con buon seeing. Per questa componente è stata calcolata l'orbita. Il suo periodo è di 907.6 anni.&lt;br /&gt;

Un'altra componente, la AD, è costituita, oltre che dalla principale, da una stella di magnitudine 10.5, separata di 172.2&amp;quot; dalla principale e a 259° di angolo di posizione.&lt;br /&gt;
