Molto spesso, soprattutto nelle notti estive, vediamo ad occhio nudo che il cielo viene solcato da punti luminosi, come aspetto in tutto simili a stelle, ma che si muovono con un moto molto regolare e attraversano il cielo in un tempo che oscilla fra i 5 e i 10 minuti.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Si tratta di satelliti artificiali, oggetti messi in orbita attorno alla Terra dall'uomo, che per gli scopi più vari (comunicazioni, sorveglianza, ricerca scientifica) ruotano attorno al nostro pianeta e attraversano i nostri cieli.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Di questi oggetti ce ne sono molte migliaia in orbita, e solo una minoranza sono satelliti in piena operazione: per la maggior parte dei casi si tratta di satelliti che hanno esaurito la loro vita utile, sezioni di razzi vettori, gusci protettivi, e rottami spaziali di vario genere.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I satelliti più visibili, quelli che attirano anche l'attenzione degli osservatori meno attenti, sono quelli di maggiori dimensioni e che orbitano più vicini alla superficie della Terra.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Per entrambe queste caratteristiche (grandi dimensioni e vicinanza alla supericie terrestre) il satellite artificiale più notevole è la Stazione Spaziale Internazionale ISS (International Space Station), nata dalla collaborazione fra cinque agenzie spaziali, la canadese (CSA), l'europea (ESA), la giapponese (JAXA - già NASDA), l'agenzia russa (RKA) e quella statunitense (NASA).&lt;br /&gt;

Grande come un campo da calcio (al contrario di altri satelliti che sono poco più grandi di un pallone da pallacanestro), la ISS in condizioni favorevoli raggiunge magnitudini negative, vale a dire che fa a gara come luminosità con i pianeti più luminosi, Giove e Venere.&lt;br /&gt;

Per poter vedere un satellite artificiale, che non brilla di luce propria, occorre anzitutto che sia illuminato dal Sole e che il nostro luogo di osservazione sia nell'oscurità. &lt;br /&gt;
I satelliti artificiali sono meglio visibili poco dopo il tramonto e poco prima dell'alba, anche se d'estate, essendo il cono d'ombra della Terra abbastanza basso sopra alle nostre teste, è facile osservare satelliti nel corso di tutta la notte.&lt;br /&gt;
D'inverno, al contrario, la &amp;quot;finestra&amp;quot; di visibilità tende a ridursi a ridosso del tramonto e dell'alba.&lt;br /&gt;

Il calcolo delle orbite e della visibilità dei passaggi è abbastanza complesso e, all'inzio dell'era spaziale, erano molti gli astrofili che registravano e fotografavano passaggi di satelliti, collaboravano con le agenzie fornendo i loro dati, si ingegnavano con calcoli e mappe per prevedere i passaggi dei satelliti.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Un tipo di astrofilia che non c'è più, da &amp;quot;tempi eroici&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Oggi osservare i passaggi dei satelliti artificiali è molto più semplice, in quanto ci sono software e siti internet che offrono tabelle aggiornate e riferite alla propria località.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Da uno di questi siti, [http://www.heavens-above.com Heavens Above], ci siamo fatti gentilmente offrire la possibilità di mettere on-line i passaggi della ISS.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Basta fare click sul capoluogo di provincia a noi più vicino (differenze di qualche decina di km non cambiano le previsioni in modo significativo per l'osservazione visuale) e troveremo sul monitor del nostro PC le previsioni per i 10 giorni successivi e calcolate per la località che abbiamo scelto (le province con più di un capoluogo, ove possibile, come Forlì-Cesena, Pesaro-Urbino, ecc., compaiono con i nomi dei capoluoghi separati).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

L'osservazione di un satellite luminoso come la ISS può essere fatta tranquillamente ad occhio nudo.&lt;br /&gt;
Lo strumento più indicato per osservare, in generale, i satelliti artificiali è un binocolo a basso ingrandimento e a grande campo. La classica taglia 7x50 offre un campo elevato (superiore ai 5°) e raccoglie abbastanza luce per osservare satelliti anche di debole luminosità.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Il telescopio, per via del piccolo campo inquadrato e della grande velocità del satellite, è uno strumento di solito poco adatto, anche se ci sono astrofili che con telescopi guidati a mano o dal computer eseguono foto e filmati in cui si vede la forma del satellite.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
La ISS, essendo così grande e relativamente vicina, con ingrandimenti modesti (20x) consente di apprezzarne le dimensioni, si vede cioè che non ha un aspetto puntiforme.&lt;br /&gt;
Per chi vuole tentare questa esperienza, l'Apprendista Astrofilo consiglia di scegliere un transito non troppo oltre il tramonto. Il cielo ancora chiaro, infatti, diminuisce il contrasto dell'immagine, e l'immagine binoculare o telescopica della luminosa ISS produce meno raggi e baffi di luce (&amp;quot;spara di meno&amp;quot;, in gergo). Date le condizioni di osservazione occorre un supporto per muovere velocemente lo strumento e la messa a fuoco va effettuata in anticipo, in modo da non perdere tempo e concentrarsi sull'inseguimento. &lt;br /&gt;

I dati principali della tabella sono la data del transito e la magnitudine massima calcolata.&lt;br /&gt;
Sono poi indicati per tre punti, vale a dire per l'inizio e la fine del transito, e per il punto di massima altezza sull'orizzonte:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- l'orario preciso al secondo (si tratta dell'ora locale e tiene conto dell'ora legale, quindi non ci sono correzioni da fare)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- l'altezza in gradi rispetto all'orizzonte, da 0° a 90°&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- la direzione verso la quale osservare, espressa in funzione dei punti cardinali rispetto all'osservatore&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Occorre un minimo di cura per trovarsi sul posto all'ora giusta: un orologio sincronizzato sul normale segnale orario radiotelevisivo è più che sufficiente. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Conviene comunque iniziare qualche l'osservazione qualche minuto prima per orientarsi e adattarsi un minimo all'oscurità.   &lt;br /&gt;
