Christophorus Clavius, latinizzazione di Christoph Clau (o Klau, o Schlusse (“chiave” in tedesco, come “clavis” in latino), nasce a Bamberg il 25 marzo 1538 (o ’37 secondo alcuni) e muore a Roma il 12 febbraio 1612.&lt;br /&gt;
La sua biografia è muta fino al 1555 quando entra nell’ordine dei Gesuiti; l’anno successivo è a Coimbra, dove inizia gli studi matematici. Nel 1560 esegue alcune osservazioni di una eclisse di sole, che lo indirizzano definitivamente verso l’astronomia. Sempre nel 1560 si trasferisce al Collegio Romano di Roma, dove rimane fino alla morte, insegnando matematica.&lt;br /&gt;
Nel 1579 viene nominato Primo Matematico della Commissione deputata alla riforma del Calendario Giuliano. Il nuovo Calendario viene adottato nei paesi cattolici nel 1582, sotto Papa Gregorio XIII.  Per questa sua attività viene soprannominato “Euclide del XVI secolo”.&lt;br /&gt;
Ha scritto numerosi testi di matematica, una versione degli Elementi di Euclide, libri di aritmetica, geometria, algebra e un commento alla “Sfera” di Sacrobosco.&lt;br /&gt;
E’ ancora un sostenitore del modello geocentrico tolemaico, ortodosso all’epoca, di cui però riconosce alcuni limiti.&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;lt;br&amp;gt; '''Clavius''' è uno dei maggiori crateri della Luna, almeno della sua parte visibile dalla Terra, ed è, in genere, tra i primi ad essere osservato dagli astrofili alle prime armi per la sua peculiarità di essere a sua volta interessato dalla presenza di una serie di crateri, di diametro progressivamente minore, disposti ad arco con concavità rivolta a Sud. Questi crateri costituiscono essi  stessi  un utile banco di prova per piccoli strumenti. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Ha un diametro di 231 Km e si trova a Sud di Tycho per circa 2 volte il suo diametro. I bordi sono molto irregolari e frastagliati, alti circa 4,4 Km e, nella parte orientale, sono interessati da due crateri quasi uguali per dimensioni e disposti simmetricamente (Rutherfurd, 48 KM a Sud e Porter, 52 Km, a Nord). Rutherfurd è anche il primo e più grande dei 6 crateri disposti ad arco e chiamati con lettere (nell’ordine D, C, N, J i maggiori, di dimensioni variabili da 28 a 12 Km. Potrebbero essere derivati dall’impatto di frammenti di varie dimensioni originati da un unico corpo celeste, arrivati in formazione e caduti in successione nel cratere. Tuttavia, alcuni elementi farebbero pensare ad epoche di impatto diverse. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
La vastissima pianura centrale è convessa  a causa della curvatura lunare, tanto che, a luce radente, la parte centrale del fondo è illuminata mentre le montagne del bordo opposto al Sole non lo sono. La curvatura è tale che un osservatore dal centro della pianura non vedrebbe i bordi e dalla cima di un bordo non vedrebbe l’altro. In essa sono presenti numerosissimi craterini di pochi Km di diametro, soprattutto nella parte occidentale, probabilmente dovuti  alla formazione del Bacino Orientale, una formazione invisibile dalla Terra in quanto posta sull’altro emisfero. La mancanza di craterini nella parte orientale sarebbe dovuta alla azione dei crateri Rutherfurd e Porter, al momento della loro formazione.&lt;br /&gt;
